Committee Description
African Union:
Formed in 2002, the African Union has worked to advance technological, humanitarian, and social efforts in the continent. However, systemic barriers to growth persist. In this committee, delegates must navigate an ever-changing geopolitical landscape, shaping the path forward for the continent. The question is not whether Africa is capable of achieving its true potential, it’s whether the leaders of their nations are ready. The choice is yours.

Background Guide
Topics of Debate
Topic A: Retaining Skilled Professionals in African Nations
Across the continent, a quiet departure is reshaping entire societies. Doctors leave hospitals already stretched thin. Teachers turn classrooms into memories. Engineers board flights knowing their skills are needed most in the places they are leaving behind. This is the human face of brain drain. The loss is felt in empty clinics, in schools struggling to stay open, and in delayed projects that could have changed communities. Delegates will explore the phenomenon known as Brain Drain and why so many skilled professionals feel forced to choose opportunity abroad over service at home, and what structural changes are needed to reverse the flow. At its core, this topic asks nations to consider how a continent is supposed to grow when its brightest minds are pulled elsewhere, and what it means to build a future strong enough for them to stay.

Topic B: Natural Resources & Environment
Beneath African soil lies the continent’s true untapped resource: 30% of the world’s mineral reserves. However, these are largely controlled by warlords and immense corruption, a hurdle that must be overcome in order for the widespread population to benefit from the ample potential that surrounds them. Delegates must navigate the complexities of extracting and utilizing resources, while considering climate change and sustainable development. It is up to you to create policy, empower the region, and make change. What will you do?
