Committee Description

SOCHUM:

Humans, society, and the world have all progressed incredibly through history. From nomadic societies to smartphones, we have bettered our standards time and time again. Yet, issues of segregation and indebted labour that were once viewed as disgusting and promptly dealt with, have emerged once again. In this committee, delegates will have the power to solve these complex and nuanced problems of humanity for the second time, only this time ensuring that the third time does not return and is not the charm.

Background Guide

Topics of Debate

Topic A: Child Labour and Debt Bondage

Despite the abolishment of slavery, child labour and debt bondage remain increasingly prevalent in today’s world. With hereditary slavery in the form of descent-based servitude, separated families, and inadequate Child Protective Services, many still are not free from the systemic barriers and chains that hold them back. Delegates must act to find solutions towards a problem rooted in deep inequality, oppression, and disregard for human rights. This crisis will continue to persist forever, unless delegates finally bring change forth and end child labour and debt bondage once and for all.

Topic B: Issues of Apartheid

Globally, issues of apartheid are alarmingly omnipresent. As cultural assimilation plagues minority groups, “second class citizens” and segregated populations are disregarded as lesser individuals, and religious states enforce cultural homogeneity, this problem has taken a new form in the 21st century. But all hope is not lost. Delegates have the unique platform to refuse to accept this as a conformity of society. It is up to them to take action, make change, and ensure that no human being around the world is treated disproportionately ever again.
